The PJ Tatler ? Survey Says: Majority of Small Business Owners ...

The survey, conducted by the National Association of Manufacturers and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, says quite a bit about why America?s economy is so stagnant.

The poll, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (POS), surveyed 800 small business owners, manufacturers and decision-makers at small and medium-sized companies, with a majority (55 percent) saying the national economy is in a worse position compared to three years ago. Among the chief factors survey respondents cited were federal regulations, taxes, government spending and the cost of health insurance and energy.

Key survey findings include the following:

  • 67 percent say there is too much uncertainty in the market today to expand, grow or hire new workers.
  • 69 percent of small business owners and manufacturers say President Obama?s Executive Branch and regulatory policies have hurt American small businesses and manufacturers.
  • 55 percent say they would not start a business today given what they know now and in the current environment.
  • 54 percent say other countries like China and India are more supportive of their small businesses and manufacturers than the United States.

?Manufacturers have told policymakers in Washington time and again that uncertainty and a negative business environment is turning the American Dream into a nightmare,? said NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons. ?The findings of this survey show that manufacturers and other small businesses have a starkly negative outlook for their future?with good reason. There is far too much uncertainty, too many burdensome regulations and too few policymakers willing to put aside their egos and fulfill their responsibilities to the American people. To fix this problem, we need immediate action on pro-growth tax and regulatory policies that put manufacturers in the United States in a position to compete and succeed in an ever-more competitive global economy.?

Business owners recognize that Obama?s policies are strangling them and the larger economy. But it?s not evident that the rest of the country gets this, or cares.

Tokyoflash releases the Kisai Logo, treads the line between confusing and amazing (video)

Image

Extraordinary Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash adds to its line of outlandish timepieces with the Kisai Logo. Much like its brethren, its face can't be easily read by the uninitiated, with a block representing hours running around digitally displayed minutes. Wrapped in a classy stainless steel and colored acetate, it's got an EL backlight for use in the dark and a hidden binary mode for demonstrating your intellectual credentials. Like the company's other devices, it's available for the first 48 hours of its life for $99 (€78 or £63) before September 27th, when prices increase to $139 (€110, £88) and you can find plenty of explanatory details in the video after the break.

The New Fashion for Market Atheism - Center for Christian Business ...

This economy is not just a bad time economically; it is a crisis about Capitalism. There is a new fashion for market atheism. The market doesn?t work, Capitalism is bad! There is more than a hint of wistful nostalgia for Communism. Well, nostalgia ain?t what it used to be. While Communism was seen as an alternative for many decades, its failure, which largely was an economic implosion that killed millions, showed there is only one, albeit imperfect, economic system.

finalcowanimage

Communism was mythological.? It?s funny how we are told to ?grow up? about religion, yet secularists cling to the childlike myths of communism or a world where capitalism can be no more. Protesters, media headlines, the guy on Main Street all ask the same questions: What does it do for us? Why is it not providing? Why are we being punished? All these questions come pouring out, as if the economy is God-like.

And indeed, there is a spiritual parallel. When we go through a bad patch or something horrible happens, we ask why did God let that happen? Where?s God when you need him? Seeing suffering in the world, a child dying of cancer, becomes a reason to deny the existence of a loving God.

Like God, the economy is in the dock. We charge the economy with our failings. Like in a courtroom drama, the language gets twisted and we are determined to get a conviction, and lay the blame on others: fat-cats, big corporations, and all those others who seem to benefit.

The reality is different. The economy has put us in the dock. How fiscally responsible were we, as individuals, as companies or as government when the times were good? How prepared were we for the downturn? Just as surely as we know we will face tough spiritual times, we face tough financial times, so we have to wonder why we were not prepared.

In the divine economy, what is needed is good discipleship with good stewardship. In both cases, we cannot be fair weather friends of God and the economy. Yet, this economy has exposed this is the case. I didn?t hear folks complaining about their rising pay or rising value of their properties during the good times. Why during the bad times?

When things are going good for us, some thank God while others think ?I did that!? When things are going bad for us, some blame God, while others say ?it?s not my fault, why did this happen to me?? Of course, there are times when events are beyond our control and we get hit badly. But then again, there are times when we get that little piece of luck or opportunity that gives us the big break we were looking for.

Just as there is never a good time to deny God, this is not a good time for market atheism either. The economy needs folks to believe if it is to get going and support us again. The nation needs confidence to invest and innovate to solve the problems of this economy, not the dog-in-a-manger feeling-sorry-for-ourselves attitude that currently dogs this economy. This attitude is suppressing business, and investors are scared to commit their funds, to risk their capital. The economy needs capital at risk, it is called opportunity, and it makes the economy strong.

We become spiritually strong when we realize God is not about giving handouts to us, but when we reach out our hand to Him and take the risk of walking with Him through whatever weather lays ahead on our path, sunshine or storm. In this economy, we need to know that there will always be changeable economic weather ahead, which means right now we need to weather the storm, so when the sun shines on us once more we remember where we have travelled these past few years and act fiscally responsible when the next storm hits.

Boil Hazelnuts in Water with Baking Soda to Easily Remove Skins [Video]

Boil Hazelnuts in Water with Baking Soda to Easily Remove Skins If you're making Nutella or other recipes that require toasted and peeled hazelnuts it can be a pain to remove the papery skins. To make the skins easier to remove boil the hazelnuts in water with three tablespoons of baking soda.

Culinary weblog My Baking Addiction found this tip from an old clip of Julia Child's cooking show with guest Alice Medrich. After boiling the hazelnuts in the water for three minutes the water will become black. Drain the hazelnuts and rinse with cold water which should make the skins slip off easily.

The conventional method of removing hazelnut skins is to roast them for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then rub the skins off with a dampened kitchen towel. The author at My Baking Addiction tried both methods and the boiling technique ended up making the skins much easier to remove.

Euro Zone Risks Breakup Without Bank Union: Ex ECB Official

The euro zone risks disintegration unless governments can agree on a banking union underpinned by a universal deposit safety net, former European Central Bank policymaker Athanasios Orphanides said on Saturday.

Europe Sculpture

Adam Berry | Getty Images

The 'Europe' sculpture by Belgian artist May Claerhout, showing a woman holding up the symbol of the Euro, stands outside the European Parliament building on November 22, 2011 in Brussels, Belgium.

Orphanides, who was a member of the ECB Governing Council until May, said critics of unified deposit insurance - notably Germany - were harming the 17-nation region by allowing marked differences in bank interest rates and the safety of customer deposits from country to country.

The European Commission unveiled sweeping plans for the ECB to supervise all euro zone banks last week as a first step toward a banking union, though Germany immediately raised objections that the proposals risked overstretching the ECB.

"I think it's essential that minds are changed in this direction otherwise I believe we risk the disintegration of the euro area," Orphanides said on the sidelines of a Group of 20 seminar in Mexico City.

"Those governments that believe that we can have a system that penalizes banks in some states and subsidizes banks in another states are harming the euro area in a very significant way."

Euro zone finance ministers meeting in Cyprus last weekend failed to agree on the framework for banking union, with Germany and others concerned that deposit guarantees will put them on the hook for banks in Greece or Spain by using deposits in their local banks to fund rescues in other countries.

While at the ECB, Orphanides advocated ultra-low interest rates at the height of the financial crisis and was a key architect of its original bond purchase program, which has been revived in a different format.

Now a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the former Cyprus governor said the ECB's move to link future bond purchases to reforms gave better incentives to politicians to push ahead with much-needed changes.

"The actions of the ECB have had the effect of buying some additional time for the governments and it is the governments that need to step in and take the bold, necessary, political decisions in order to restore stability," Orphanides said.

He also urged emerging market economies to allow their currencies to appreciate to help rebalance the global economy, something countries such as Brazil have vowed to resist if extra stimulus in Europe, Japan and the United States puts pressure on local exchange rates.

"We cannot keep postponing ... the adjustment in exchange rates that needs to take place," he said.

Adoption & Foster Care: My Personal Experiences: Fost Adopt Parents

The following was written by Marty Hood, LCSW in August 2010:

FOST-ADOPT PARENTS:? Challenges for Shared Parenting with Biological Parents

It is difficult to be a Foster-Adopt parent.

On the one hand, a Foster-Adopt parent is hoping that his child might become part of their family.? They want to dream and plan.? They want to begin taking them into their heart so that if by chance, it works out, the child will already feel loved.

However, they are expected to keep this hope on the back burner while they try to help the child and parent with reunification efforts.

This puts them in a very challenging position.? It is a challenge to open your heart and then be disappointed.? It is a loss and requires going through the grieving process.? It would be nice if we could all see ourselves as a temporary but safe haven where we do the best we can to provide love, security, safety, and hope.? Perhaps seeing yourself as the Safety Net Grandparents who wants what is best for your own children and for your children?s children.? If these foster children were the children of your own child, you would hope and pray that your daughter/son would get their priorities straight and be successful, loving parents.

CHALLENGES:

-It is difficult to remain non-biased when you get the information about why the child was removed.

-It is difficult to put yourself in the bio parent?s place because you can?t imagine allowing yourself to become ?like them.?

-It is a challenge to realize that a meth mom in person is very different from just hearing about the meth mom.

-It is a challenge to try to partner with someone who has hurt their child.? It is a challenge to remember that you don?t know the history or experience of a person.? (It is a challenge not to judge).

-It is challenging to remain strength-based when a child complains when they come back from visits.

-It is challenging to remember that negative behavior after a visit does not automatically mean that the visit was bad or that it is evidence that there should be mo more visits.

This is a myth that perpetuates itself when looked at in a simplistic way.? Bad behavior=bad visit= bad parent.? Even in the best circumstances where divorced parents are consistent, loving, and kind, children will have a transition period where their behavior is negative.? It is natural and normal to have a difficult time adapting to different homes, different rules, different personalities and feeling a division of loyalty.? It?s hard to go and it?s hard to come home. ?It?s a bit like jet lag.

-It is a challenge to keep from wishing that the biological parent will fail.? Just be aware of this challenge and fight the urge to filter out the good things while looking for the bad.

-It is a challenge to try to disconnect gracefully when it looks like everything points to the child returning with the parents.? This is especially difficult when your heart says that the child would be better off with you.

You must trust that somehow in some way, that things will be as they should be.

You did your best and provided a temporary safe haven of love and care.

a month, a week, and a day away ? Les Petites Gourmettes

? from today, is Halloween!

My Illinois BFF, Jen, called me at 8:34 AM this past Monday morning and was buzzing about a blog that she had just found and completely loved. There was a craft on that blog that SHE AND I HAD to do ? right now! (yep, that is her above, I know, she?s super pretty, and yeah, I adore her!)

HERE is the blog ? and the project ? that we I did that very day.

And here is the story of exactly how that went down:

I jumped in my car, which was serendipitously filled with gas just the day before, and headed out to the closest? 99? Only Store, which is exactly 3.3 miles from my house, to buy the necessary supplies. There, I found 11 black feather boas, 4 packages of black and gray gauze, 4 black glitter skulls, and 2 silver glitter skulls.? From there I drove across the street to Hobby Lobby and purchased 2 foam wreath forms, using a 40% off coupon for one of those wreaths. Total amount spent ? $33.79 plus tax.

I came home, knowing full well that the eleven skimpy $1 boas were not going to cover two wreaths, but I needed to see just how many boas it would take before I headed out for more. First, with a glib sense of accomplishment, I used my iPhone to snap photo of my newly purchased supplies and sent it off to Jen, saying, ?I Got Mine!?

Her quick reply, ?#@&*!% where did u find it and how much did u pay ? I struck out #&*+@%!!!? (I know, who would think that a girl, so gorgeous, would have such a trucker?s mouth, but she does, just one of the billion things I love about her!)

Ha! Winning! I looked at those skimpy boas and knew that I?d need to somehow blacken up those white foam wreaths, so I wrapped each with a section of the black gauze first and then began wrapping one of the wreaths with boas. It took 9 boas to cover. Time to get back in the car and find 7 more boas before Jen got hers! That is, if I was going to be the ultimate Halloween wreath winner, and that was certainly my intention!!!

I drove to two different Dollar Tree stores, the first was 2.5 miles from my house and the other was 2.6 miles from the first store. Neither had black boas. Shoot! OK, I had to find out where the next closest 99? Only Store was.

To make a very long story short ? I ended up driving another 38 miles to four different 99? Only Stores and only came up with 4 more black boas. I wasn?t feeling like such a winner now! I got on the 101 freeway to head home, quite a bit defeated, when I remembered that there was a Jo-Ann?s just off the Indian Bend off-ramp. I ducked in and purchased a very thick and plush $8.99 six-foot black boa for $4.49, using my iPhone Jo-Ann app 50% off coupon.

Now the cost of the project, that I didn?t even know existed until six hours and 50 miles prior, had come to a total of $38.28 plus tax?. plus a quarter tank of gas, half a day, and a boatload of frustration!

But hey, don?t they look great? Plus, I assembled, put up, and even lit up my wreaths (the skulls have little lights inside) before my sweet Jen even found a single piece of glitter!!! Monday was a wasteland for her. Poor Jenny!

Yeah, my girl was still out searching every Hobby Lobby, Micheal?s, Jo-Ann?s, and dollar store in a 50 mile radius of her house for the supplies the next morning.

Gotta love women on a mission!

Obviously, you can read and follow the directions on that original blog post by the creative and very funny woman who first created these wreaths. She explains it perfectly! But I did make a couple changes, one because it makes more sense and the other out of necessity.

She cut up pieces of wire and bent them to use as pins for putting together the wreath. I just used greening pins, which are cheap, great to have on hand for a multitude of home projects, and available at all the craft stores and flower shops. That was my ?better? idea.

I was not able to find small styrofoam glitter sculls, so I had to figure out someway to attached the ones I did find. They were made of hard plastic. I noticed they had that little plastic tag-holder thingy on the back. Instead of cutting it off, like I would usually do, I used it to my advantage.

I took some black string (left from the tag hanger off the boas) and tied it to the plastic tab?

?then tied and knotted the string around a greening pin and pushed the pin into the foam ? worked like a charm!

For whatever reason, the skulls look silver and white here, but the silver looking ones are actually black and the white looking ones are silver. Must be the light and reflection in the lens.

See, silver, not white.

AND NOW? Here are a few of Jen?s details and her gorgeous finished wreath?umm, that she completed the day after me? on Tuesday. :-)

Jen went with oval grapevine wreaths. She had the hardest time finding reasonably priced boas, so she bought enough to do one wreath now (by going to 3 different stores and using % off coupons to buy 1 boa at a time) and will go back in the next couple days to buy the rest needed for her second wreath.

Jen did have more luck with the skulls, as you can see!? She ended up using the six skulls on the left, spray painting them and glittering them, herself.

Here they are out in the yard, drying in the Chicago sunshine.

And here is Jen?s awesome oval Halloween wreath! Oooh, I like the addition of the spider! In all honesty, I think her wreath looks a whole bunch spookier and a whole lot better than mine!

If all this doesn?t put you in the Halloween spirit, I don?t know what will!? Remember it?s only a month, a week, and a day away! xoxo

Researchers Create Silicon-Based Quantum Bit

No, they've demonstrated a single Qubit.

TFS makes things mucky by mentioning single electron transistors too, which are a completely different beast.

The problem with quantum computing isn't demonstrating single qubits though. The problem is in getting a reasonable number in a superposition. Most I've ever seen in a QC that actually does computations is 7 qubits.

Just to get an idea of the scale we need, Shor's algorithm, the one which we could use to crack RSA encryption in polynomial time, needs 2*N qubit

When students fail to learn to read, why do we work harder, instead ...

I perfomed some training in a school a year ago and between sessions chatted with the academic coaches in their office. I still remember where I was sitting and where the reading coach was standing when she said, ?Teaching reading is really a complicated science.? I didn?t reply at the time, but I have thought about her comment many times since.

Back in the olden days, teaching reading just wasn?t the rocket science it has since become. Ironically, more children are failing to learn to read now than back in those days. Radical changes and experimentation in teaching approaches yielded an increasing number of children failing at learning to read, and as other factors weighed in, the situation became dire.

Just recently I have started hearing a tiny bit from politicians about the state of K-12 education. Dr. Rice, in her speech at the Republican National Convention, pointed out the fact that your zip code largely predetermines whether or not you have access to a good education. While I believe she is absolutely right, I happen to know that even in affluent zip codes, there are children who are also not learning to read. In my opinion, we?ve reached the point where this failure is an epidemic.

There are two separate burning issues here

1.????School quality and the opportunity for equality in education is a critical issue that must be addressed as we continue to claim that every person is equal and enjoys equal access to the benefits that come from being citizens of this great country. Because right now, every citizen in our country does NOT have equal access to quality education. In my own colorful black and white world, this is wrong and should not be ignored any longer. We CAN fix this!

All schools are not equal!

2.????And then there is the separate issue of failing teaching approaches, which also must be addressed if we hope to prevent this new generation from being functionally illiterate. It is this topic that concerns me personally and that is on my mind every single time I come to work. I have devoted the past 12 years to research and study in order to answer one question: ?Why do some children fail to learn to read?? And I have come to believe passionately that most of those children who are not learning to read COULD learn to read if the teaching materials and approaches changed for them. I know this is true because I have seen it over and over again ? you take a failing child, show him the new materials and the lights suddenly and dramatically turn on. It makes you feel like Wonder Woman, but it is not really about you/me at all! It is all about finding the right approach and the most effective materials.

Adding stuff doesn?t fix the pot

I love to cook and love flavoring dishes. I have had some experiences with good soup ideas that went bad, and the most common problem I have is the tendency of over-salting my dishes. Anyone who has eaten at my house can attest to this fact. My knee-jerk reaction to over-salting an otherwise perfectly wonderful soup is to keep adding more and more ingredients in the hopes that this increased bulk will somehow cause the salt to be spread around more thinly to more and more vegetables. Believe me, it does not work, so don?t try this at home! All that ever happens is that Books17 I end up with an enormous pot of soup that no one wants to eat because? it is over-salted! And I cringe at the veggie-waste!

The same exact approach has been adopted with teaching reading. The whole language movement was one of those fanciful, romantic experiments that failed miserably. ?All you need is love? was the theme of the day, and in classrooms all across our country, while this music was playing on the Funny-sign-failsradios across the land, teachers were being convinced that all children needed was to be surrounded by books and they would learn to read. Most children can?t and don?t learn to read by simply being immersed in print. This is why the level of literacy has dropped like a rock in the past few decades.

The reaction to increased failure has been increased complexity, which is the exact opposite approach that should be taken. Most children who fail to learn to read do so because there is a massive amount of extraneous information, detail, busy-work, steps, copy work, homework, testing, (and the list goes on and on and on) that gets in the way of the actual process of learning to read. In my colorful black and white world, what I have found works magically is SIMPLIFICATION. It is counter-intuitive, but it is critical.

What SIMPLIFICATION is not:

  • Lowering our expectations of what struggling children can learn
  • Omitting certain tough skills (such as correct grammar and spelling and word usage)
  • Allowing invented spelling (Invented what? Who thought that was a good idea!)
  • Letting children work at learning to read by having them copy things we hope will eventually stick to their brains
  • Dodging complex vocabulary and keeping to very simple words

You raise the bar, simplify the approach, and celebrate a lot

In my room (small group or whole classroom) the bar was raised to 100% mastery. That was the beginning point. I made it very clear to the students at the same time I made sure they understood that we were changing up the methods that had not worked for them before.

We also made big celebratory noises whenever the 100% mastery mark was reached. We DpPhoto5had stickers and stars, we had simple certificates, and at first we had monthly pizza brought in for lunch. It was a party! The pizza was an incentive I put into place to celebrate everyone in the group achieving 100% mastery because I thought this might be a tough challenge to reach. Imagine my delight when this group mastery became the norm! The kids learned very quickly to help each other, cheer each other on, and offer helps along the way. We replaced the costly pizza parties with weekly certificates in the school auditorium. The whole school knew that in order for these kids to get a certificate, their whole group had to score 100% and funny thing? Regular classrooms began to work toward this mark. I remember on Fridays hearing big cheers next door as the third graders found out everyone in class had scored a 100% on their weekly test. I have goose bumps on my arms right now as I remember this. There is absolutely NOTHING like achievement to breed more achievement!

How we simplified the teaching approach

The approach we use that is so effective is contained in our Easy-for-Me? materials. The Easy-for-Me? Reading Program was developed while working over a period of years with beginners of various ability levels. Every single detail that was not essential to learning to read was omitted. They are super distracting to the learning process for many children. I have written so much about the hallmarks of the EFM Reading Approach, so I won?t repeat myself here. But rest assured that this approach utilizes the whole body and various pathways to the brain in a very simple approach that is super powerful in terms of the results with children.

This simplification along with raising the bar meant also that children began to read far earlier, but in a far more developmentally appropriate way. The senses of sight and of touch are where young children are in their development at the time they are expected to learn to read. We have taken this to heart in the design of EFM Reading materials so that every possible little thing is taught utilizing this natural bent to see and touch. Our goal is not to push reading on little children at an earlier age, but rather to make it possible for little children to learn in a developmentally appropriate way so that they can succeed!

Best Production - Arts and Entertainment - Baltimore City Paper

1727 N. Charles St., http://everymantheatre.org, (410) 752-2208

Noel Coward?s comedies have not worn well, and audiences have sat through too many tired productions where talented actors, designers, and directors do competent work with nothing to show for it but a few chuckles and polite applause. To reinvigorate Coward, you have to dig beneath the characters? apparently complacent sophistication to the desperation below, to the realization that they?re lying not only to each other but also to themselves. That?s what director Carl Schurr achieved with Private Lives last winter at the Everyman Theatre, pulling astonishing performances from Bruce Nelson and Deborah Hazlett as ex-spouses who bump into each other on their rebound honeymoons. They kept bumping?violently, angrily, magnetically.

Kinds of Fly Tying Feathers

Most serious fly fishermen tie their own artificial flies. It is more convenient and costs less than purchasing prepared flies. It is a creative pursuit that is highly enjoyable to engage in. Fly tying feathers are an important part of your fly typing materials.

An artificial fly is made to look like an insect or fish that the fish you will be fishing for would eat. It conceals the hook while attracting the fish to take a bite. You can find many patterns on the internet and in books and magazines with detailed instructions on how to make different types of flies. Many of these patterns are proven classics. Fly tying has been around for centuries.

There are different types of feathers that are used for the different parts of the artificial fly. Sturdier, thicker feather elements such as biots are used to make bodies and wings. More delicate fly tying feathers make up the shapes of the legs and tails. Feathers are available in both natural colors and dyed.

Mallard feathers are frequently used to make wings. You will probably run across some feathers that are called CDC. That is the acronym for cul de canard, which could be translated as bottom of the duck. These are the feathers that surround the bird's oil gland, so they are also called oil gland feathers. It is this oily quality that makes them great fly tying feathers for dry flies, which need to stay on the surface of the water.

The fly tying feathers called hackles are very commonly used. Cape hackles are from the neck or shoulders of a hen or rooster, while saddle hackles are in the tail area. The webbing in these feathers makes them useful for dry flies because they float better. The schlappen is a specific type of feather from the saddle hackles from a hen, and is widely used in both wet and dry flies.

Marabou feathers are usually from turkeys, sometimes chickens. It is illegal to buy or sell true marabou feathers. The feathers are wispy and fluffy, which gives them the characteristic of moving around quite a bit underwater. They are also used as tails and as legs in a number of different streamer and nymph fly patterns.

Ostrich and peacock feathers are both used to create fly legs, heads, and tails. Peacock feathers are also used for bodies as they animate very well. Turkey quills are used to make bodies and wing casings, and turkey feathers for some other purposes. Partridge feathers are generally sold as a skin, the whole back and wings of the bird, which provides a variety of feathers for different applications. They are used for hackles, and can replicate tails, legs, and bodies.

Pheasant feathers, especially the tail feathers, are used for legs, tails, wingcases, and bodies. Fly tying feathers from the pheasant's body are used to create abdomens. Golden pheasant feathers are used in flies for trout, steelhead, and salmon. They may be used to make tails, wings, and cheeks.

Obama leading in key battleground state of Virginia

President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney among likely voters in Virginia by 8 percentage points, a new Washington Post poll shows.

From the Post:

President Obama continues to hold a clear lead over Mitt Romney in Virginia, a new Washington Post polls shows, buoyed by enthusiastic support rivaling what he marshaled in 2008 to snap the Democrats' 44-year losing streak in the state.

Likely voters in the Commonwealth favor Obama 52 to 44 percent. Among all voters, the president is up 50 to 43 percent, identical to his margin in a survey in early May.

Virginia is considered an important battleground state for both campaigns. Obama won a majority of votes in the Old Dominion State in his first run for president in 2008, even though it's traditionally a Republican stronghold.

The poll was conducted by telephone September 12-16 among 1,104 adults in Virginia and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
