As Ford plant waned, many workers slow to prepare

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ford announced it would close its St.
Paul assembly plant in 2006, but when the fateful day arrived last month, many of the 800 workers there still didn't have a plan for their next job.

The state has offered help for workers to write resumes and
sharpen their interviewing skills. Subsidized job training programs have been available for years.

But workers at the plant say working 50 hours a week left them
with little energy to look for another job, especially one that
would pay less than the $28 an hour they made at Ford.

The plant had 1,800 employees in 2006, but state figures show
only about 300 have finished the state's dislocated worker
training. The good news: 90 percent of those got jobs.

LG to sell 55-inch TV using new ultra-thin tech

(AP) ? For flat-panel TVs, the choice for years has been between plasma and LCD. In the coming year, there'll be another choice, at least for those prepared to spend big.

LG Electronics Inc. says it's planning to sell a 55-inch set based on organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. The Korean company is set to show it off at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which starts Jan. 10.

Samsung Electronics Co., LG's Korean rival, will also reveal a nearly market-ready OLED TV at the show, according to three people with knowledge of the matter. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Samsung has yet to make an announcement. Its website says CES announcements will come Jan. 9.

Tim Alessi, director of home electronics development at LG's USA arm, said its set will likely go on sale in the fourth quarter. The company isn't revealing the price.

Paul Gagnon, an analyst at DisplaySearch, estimates that OLED sets will start out above $5,000.

The screen technology is in use in high-end smartphones and provides deeply saturated colors and high contrast. However, it's been very difficult to make larger screens with consistent results. In late 2007, Sony Corp. started selling an 11-inch OLED TV for about $2,500, but it never followed it up with a bigger model.

Since then, LG and Samsung have shown prototype OLED TVs at the annual CES show, but haven't revealed any marketing plans.

Apart from providing improved picture quality, OLED TVs can be very thin. LG's set will be 4 millimeters thick (3/16ths of an inch) and weight 16.5 pounds.

Hyundai, Kia see slower sales growth in 2012 (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and affiliate Kia Motors (000270.KS) aim to boost global vehicle sales by 6 percent this year to a combined 7 million units, which would mark a slowdown for a duo that has enjoyed double-digit sales rises in recent years.

"I expect the automotive industry to see growth slowing because of the European debt crisis and the global economic slowdown, while competition is expected to intensify among automakers this year," Chung Mong-koo, chairman of Hyundai and Kia's parent group, said in his annual speech to employees.

He did not give a breakdown of Hyundai and Kia's individual sales targets.

The world's fifth-biggest automotive group by sales has been an outperformer especially during the global financial crisis, but South Korean carmakers are bracing for macroeconomic uncertainty and rising competition.

Japanese rivals are reviving from output losses caused by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand last year. Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor (7203.T) last month forecast a 20 percent jump in 2012 sales to a record 8.48 million vehicles.

A free trade deal with the United States is set to take effect early this year and cut tariffs on U.S. auto imports in South Korea.

Stretched production capacity is also preventing Hyundai and Kia from sharply boosting sales.

CONSERVATIVE TARGET

"Hyundai and Kia have offered a conservative sales target based on the negative economic outlook. I expect it to be fully achievable and sales to reach 7.2 million units next year," said Ahn Sang-jun, an auto analyst at Tong Yang Securities in Seoul. "The U.S. and Chinese auto markets are not worse than expected and will improve this year," he said.

The global car market will grow by 4 percent to 68 million vehicles in 2012 from an estimated 65.4 million in 2011, driven in part by robust sales in the United States, German auto industry association VDA said in December.

Hyundai and Kia sold 6.6 million vehicles in 2011, beating their earlier target of 6.33 million and up 15 percent from the previous year.

Hyundai plans to start production at its third Chinese plant and its first factory in Brazil in 2012, while Kia has no new plants beginning operations this year.

Hyundai plans to launch a fully revamped version of its Santa Fe SUV and a Brazil-dedicated model, the HB, in 2012. Kia is set to roll out large-sized sedan K9 and an all-new Cee'd this year, and is also discussing the launch timing of a fully revamped Forte compact.

Shares in Hyundai Motor jumped 23 percent and Kia gained 32 percent last year, far outperforming the wider market's (.KS11) 11 percent fall.

It's a 'Dancing With the Stars' reunion!

Kevin Lynch / GSN

By Anna Chan

Yes, we know, it's a loooongwait until "Dancing With the Stars" returns for its 14th season on March 19. But in the meantime, the Game Show Network has a little present for fans: a photo of various celebs and pros who have participated in the flashy ballroom bash over the show's many seasons.

Season 13 champ J.R. Martinez, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Ralph Macchio, Mel B., Gilles Marini, Audrina Patridge, Derek Hough, Lacey Schwimmer and Chaz Bono all posed together for a GSN photo that the network said made " 'Dancing With the Stars' history." The reason for the snapshot? To celebrate the network's acquisition of "DWTS" reruns.

GSN recently announced on Dec. 15 that it will begin airing season four of the ABC dance competition beginning on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. The episodes will air every Saturday through March 3. The celeb competitors for that season include, Apolo Anton Ohno, Heather Mills, Joey Fatone, Leeza Gibbons and others.

Will you rewatch (or watch for the first time) season four while awaiting the new batch of ballroom hopefuls to show off their moves? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!
