Jordan, NBA players to raise money for Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is joining NBA legend Michael Jordan and an array of basketball stars to raise money for his re-election campaign later this month.

The Obama campaign is planning a fundraising "shoot-around" and dinner in New York on Aug. 22 featuring several NBA stars, including Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks, Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, John Wall of the Washington Wizards and others. Jordan, who played for the Chicago Bulls, Obama's favorite NBA team, and NBA Commissioner David Stern are co-hosting a $20,000-per person fundraising dinner with the president later in the day.

Obama is a longtime basketball fan who regularly plays pickup games with friends and aides. His campaign held a fundraiser last February at the Orlando-area home of NBA player Vince Carter, who is also involved in the New York events.

The campaign is holding a "shoot-around" with players at New York's Chelsea Piers sports complex, including Anthony, Rondo, Wall, Paul Pierce, Kyrie Irving, Joe Johnson and former NBA centers Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. WNBA stars Sheryl Swoopes and Dawn Staley are also participating in the event, which will cost $5,000 for a parent and child or two people to have a "shoot-around skills session" with the players. A $250 donation provides an autograph session with the players.

Obama's campaign plans to raffle off the chance for grass-roots supporters to attend the events.

A similar "Obama Classic" basketball event planned for last December was postponed after team owners and players reached a labor deal following a lockout.

Rivals look beyond London as team GB win more gold

French track team bosses are already looking towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The only consolation is they are not alone.

On the penultimate day of track cycling at the Olympic velodrome Gregory Bauge found himself in the unfamiliar position of second place on the podium after failing to beat Jason Kenny to the coveted sprint gold.

It gave Britain their fifth gold medal from the seven finals held so far and with three strong riders in the last three races on Tuesday the hosts could make it eight from 10.

While Bauge tried to digest his major loss to a man he had beaten in the final of the last two world championships, his coach Florian Rousseau was gracious in defeat.

"Physically, Greg was in better condition than he was at the world championships. In the end, he was just beaten, that's all," said Rousseau.

"Our objective was to win two gold medals, in the sprint and the team sprint: now we have two silver, which remain Olympic medals but, when you've been world champion four times, it's difficult to swallow.

"But we have to remain dignified. It's an Olympic medal. We just hoped it would be a different colour."

Previously considered unstoppable, Bauge says he will now "think over" whether he will remain in the sport or, as mentioned previously, switch to another track and become a 100m sprinter.

But he was bitter in defeat: "I've dominated my discipline for the past four years, and I wanted gold. I do not train twice a day for this disappointment."

And he carried his frustrations over to the post-race press conference where, to the astonishment of journalists, he took to questioning Kenny.

Kenny added a first individual Olympic title to add to the team sprint titles he has won with Britain in the past two Olympics.

Having been given the nod to represent Britain in the sprint over defending champion Sir Chris Hoy only a month ago, the 24-year-old Englishman took his chance with both hands.

While he worked on his own condition and finishing speed in the lead-up to the Games, Britain's track team did the rest by feeding him information from video evidence on his key rivals.

But the hard work was put in well before Monday.

"We've been working really hard the last six months to bridge that gap and just get faster, really. It's nice to turn up here and see that you've bridged that gap," said Kenny.

When it comes to resources, financial and otherwise, Britain are way ahead of their rivals.

Rousseau, who like Bauge was beaten the last time a Frenchman made the Olympic final -- by American Marty Nothstein, in 2000 -- refused to be drawn on suggestions that Britain are employing illicit methods.

"There are tangible things you can see, like the material they have. But behind that there's also a lot of hard work, discipline, and a lot of money and human resources," added Rousseau.

"Maybe we will never know how they're prepared for these Games. At the end of the day, what they've done is even better than what they achieved four years ago. Yes, it's even better."

Britain will aim for more track gold on Tuesday's final day at the velodrome in the women's omnium, with Laura Trott, and sprint with Victoria Pendleton.

Hoy, meanwhile, could pick up a sixth Olympic gold if he defends his men's keirin title, a feat that would push him past Sir Steve Redgrave's British record of five Olympic golds.

A guaranteed fix for the budget deficit - The Term ... - Fortune Finance

FORTUNE -- Okay, everyone knows that we've got big federal budget problems. Republicans aren't willing to raise taxes to solve them. Democrats aren't willing to cut benefits to solve the problems without taxes being increased, and maybe not even then.

What to do? In the spirit of the late Jonathan Swift's famous satirical essay, I'd like to offer A Modest Proposal to solve the problem: Get the Federal Reserve and the Treasury to start thinking like Wall Street and save us from our political inability to accomplish anything on the fiscal front.

In true Wall Street style, I'll show you a largely-overlooked source of federal profits, and show you how to exploit it.

What I'm talking about is the little-known fact that the Federal Reserve is immensely profitable, and that its profits have grown rapidly since it began dealing with the world financial crisis that started in mid-2007. A second little known fact is that the Fed sends its surplus profits to the Treasury, which counts them as revenue the same way it counts income tax payments and such.

The Fed is profitable because it creates money (as opposed to borrowing it, as other institutions do) and uses it to buy securities that pay interest at market rates. Pretty slick business model, right? Create money, then put it out at interest.

MORE:?Why Romney won't defend private equity

Because the Fed has vastly expanded its securities portfolio in an attempt to force down interest rates, both its profits and payments to the Treasury have zoomed. It sent $154.7 billion to the Treasury in 2010- 2011, more than $100 billion above the $54.6 billion it sent in 2005-06, the last two pre-crisis years. Its profits through mid-July match those of a year ago, $48.8 billion, so it's on track to post record or near-record income for the third straight year.

So far, profits have been a mere byproduct of the Fed's bailout efforts. Now, in Wall Street fashion, let's make Fed profitability an end in itself.

First, we'll have the Fed maximize its income by buying another $1 trillion or so of mortgage-backed securities, which would add about $25 billion to its annual profits. The Fed could also boost its profits by cutting or eliminating the interest (0.25% a year) that it pays on the cash that commercial and investment banks leave on deposit.

And now, the big payoff. You've got profits soaring, crossing the magic $100 billion mark. Paying that extra money to the Treasury would alleviate some budget pressure, but we're looking for a bigger score.

In a world in which Facebook (FB) was valued at $100 billion (if? only briefly), which was 100 times earnings, we can price a stellar performer like the Fed, which doesn't have to worry about ad revenues, at 200 times earnings. (As long as the Fed doesn't go public on Nasdaq, in which case let's not bother.)

MORE:?Death of Bob Diamond's dream for Barclays

Do the math: that's $20 trillion, enough to more than wipe out the national debt. We could keep control of monetary policy in the hands of the Fed's Open Market Committee by giving it one Golden Share, while selling public investors shares that carry the right to the Fed's surplus profits.

When interest rates begin to rise again, the Fed's profits will begin to fall. As will its stock price. But by then, we'll have solved our budget problems, wiped out the debt, and done it by snookering people who will have bought into a Fed bubble the same way that millions of people bought into the tech-telecom stock bubble and the housing bubble, and will buy into bubbles yet to come.

It's the American way. And the Wall Street way.

Now, for my fee. In return for this idea, I expect a modest, tax-exempt payment of 0.01 of 1% of the Fed's market value. Send it to me c/o Fortune magazine, and I'll invite you to my retirement party, which will take place the day after the check clears.

A FINAL WORD: You realize, I hope, that this column IS A SATIRE, Just as Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal," which I mentioned in the second paragraph, was a satire. Swift wasn't really proposing that poor Irish families sell their children for use as food?but some people thought he was serious.

And in these crazy, contentious days, who knows? If we republished Swift's opus under another name and title, some people might well consider it to be a seminal piece of laissez-faire economic thought.

Dropbox Reports User Accounts Were Hijacked, Adds New Security Features

dropbox-logoSeveral weeks ago, reports started to trickle out that a number of Dropbox users were under attack from spam. Since then, Dropbox has been investigating those attacks (with some help from a third-party) and today gave the first update on the progress, saying that some accounts were indeed accessed by hackers, but that it is now adding two-factor authentication and other security features to prevent further problems. For some background: On July 17th, a number of Dropbox users begun noticing an increase in the level spam attacking their accounts. As Sarah reported at the time, the red flag appeared when users begun reporting that the email accounts receiving spam were in fact only tied to their Dropbox accounts, which indicated that the address leak had come from Dropbox itself. Many of those reports came from the company's international users, including Germany, the U.K. and the Netherlands.
