Romney criticized for remark about Medicaid

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Mitt Romney has opened himself up to ridicule by saying he didn't understand Medicaid until he started working in government.

Democrats immediately pounced on the Republican presidential candidate, saying the comment was further proof that he's out of touch.

Romney told the audience at an event in Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday that he didn't understand Medicaid until he got into government. Medicaid is a federal-state health care program for the poor and disabled.

Romney later tried to clarify the remark by saying he understood the program but didn't exactly understand how it was funded.

The 64-year-old Romney first ran for public office, a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts, in 1994.
