Mystic and I were talking about food the other day.? It?s something we do a lot of.? And kissing.? We do a lot of that too.? That, however, is a post for another day.? We were talking about how different food helps you feel better about yourself.? What you?re doing to your body.? What you?re putting into it.? I got back on my slightly askewed?clean eating wagon, and coupled with Day 7 of being Diet Coke-free (he is on Day 5), I?m once again feeling the euphoria of doing right by my body.

The evidence?? This pasta salad I recently made.? (Joanne, consider this the e-mailed recipe that I promised you).? I made it one night last week, and aside from roasting the vegetables and cooking the pasta noodles, it takes nothing to pull together.? I had it for dinner that night, and seriously could not wait for the leftovers for lunch the next day.

That?s the thing about good food.? And likewise, food that?s good for you.? You crave it.? You put good food in your body and you want more of it.? That?s totally a movement that I can get behind.? And one that I?ve admittedly missed.? It makes you want to move more.? Exercise more.? Recommit yourself to yourself.? It?s that domino effect in the very best possible way.

Roasted vegetables (which are in and of itself an amazing thing).

Chick peas.? Something I sometimes snack on straight from the can.

Goat cheese.? Warm goat cheese?? Oh yes please.

The recipe for how I made this dish is loosely outlined below.? But consider it just that.? A loose outline.? Mix and match the roasted vegetables that you like to create your own little dish of wonderful.? Take advantage of the season?s best.? Add more of what you like.? Cut back on what you don?t.

But make this salad.? Treat your body good.? We?re all happier for it.? Swear.

Roasted Vegetable and Goat Cheese Pasta Salad

Ingredients:
2 cups uncooked rotini pasta
olive oil cooking spray
assorted vegetables for roasting (I used brussels sprouts, zucchini, broccoli, butternut squash, a small eggplant, a red onion and kale)
5 oz soft goat cheese, crumbled
chick peas

Vinaigrette:
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
1/4 teaspoon each kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2:1 ratio olive oil and balsamic vinegar to make a standard vinaigrette

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400F.? Prepare pasta according to package directions.? Rinse well, drain, and set aside.

Spray a cooking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and add all your vegetables in a single layer.? Roast in the oven until just brown, about 10-15 minutes.? Put vegetables in large bowl.

Prepare vinaigrette, mixing until thoroughly combined.

Add pasta and vinaigrette to bowl with vegetables and toss to coat evenly.? Top with goat cheese.? Devour.

*Best eaten slightly warm or room temperature.

NEW YORK (AP) ? At Columbia University and elsewhere, the fear among students that the New York Police Department might secretly be infiltrating their lives has spread beyond the Muslim student population to others who find the reported tactics "disgusting," as one teenager put it.

The NYPD surveillance of Muslims on a dozen college campuses in the Northeast is a surprising and disappointing violation, students said Saturday in reaction to Associated Press reports that revealed the intelligence-gathering at Columbia and elsewhere.

"If this is happening to innocent Muslim students, who's next?" asked freshman Dina Morris, 18, of Amherst, Mass. "I'm the child of an immigrant, and I was just blown away by the news; it's disgusting."

Documents obtained by the AP show that the NYPD used undercover officers and informants to infiltrate Muslim student groups. An officer even went whitewater rafting with students and reported on how many times they prayed and what they discussed. Police also trawled college websites and blogs, compiling daily reports on the activities of Muslim students and academics.

It was all part of the NYPD's efforts to keep tabs on Muslims throughout the region as part of the department's anti-terrorism efforts. Police built databases of where Muslims lived and worked, where they prayed, even where they watched sports.

In the past week, Muslims and non-Muslims alike held a town hall meeting on the Manhattan campus of the Ivy League college to discuss the police surveillance. Concerned members of many school groups attended.

On Friday, some of their counterparts at New York University choked up as they gathered to voice their outrage at the notion that even students' religious habits were being tracked by the NYPD.

"Why is the number of times that we pray per day ? whether or not I come in this space and put my forehead on the floor in worship of my Lord ? why does that have anything to do with somebody trying to keep this country safe?" said Elizabeth Dann, 29, an NYU law student.

At first, when it was revealed last weekend that Muslim students were targets of police surveillance, "people were distressed and frazzled," Mona Abdullah, a member of Columbia's Muslim Students Association, told the AP.

But by Saturday, she said, a different mood descended on the campus.

"We're now feeling a sense of unity, because this is not an issue that affects only Muslims," Abdullah said. "We're still worried, but there's also a sense of solidarity over an issue that has to be taken seriously by everyone."

Students are also feeling empathy for those outside the university community who are being subjected to the NYPD's "stop-and-frisk" policy targeting anyone who seems suspicious, mainly blacks and Hispanics.

"We're not the first and we're definitely not going to be the last," Abdullah said.

Police were interested in Muslim student groups because they attracted young men, a demographic that terrorist groups have tapped. The NYPD defended the effort, citing a dozen accused or convicted terrorists worldwide who had once been affiliated with Muslim student groups.

But students say that unfairly categorizes them all as potential terrorists.

The Muslim students "are just as American as anyone, and to make them feel unsafe and unwanted is really unfair!" said Morris, who attends Barnard College, which is affiliated with Columbia.

"There was a lot of police blowback after 9/11; they were not respecting civil liberties," said Leo Schwartz, 19, a political science major and columnist for Columbia's student newspaper, the Daily Spectator.

Anmol Gupta, 22, an engineering student, said that in a city like New York, which prides itself on ethnic diversity, "the idea of the surveillance of Muslims does surprise me, it's disturbing."

Sitting on a bench, he glanced across the university's quad at the students of many races and faiths who were walking around on a chilly winter day.

Gupta said he didn't feel students could do anything to stop the surveillance.

They certainly shouldn't do anything to change how they live from day to day ? even if they're afraid they're being watched, Abdullah said. "We're saying, 'Don't change the way you act, don't change anything you do, because we're not doing anything wrong.'"

Still, many on the campus of more than 25,000 students craved reassurance.

University President Lee Bollinger plans to host a fireside chat on Monday evening to discuss the secret monitoring.

He said in a statement Friday: "We should all be able to appreciate the deeply personal concerns of the Muslim members of our community in learning that their activities were being monitored ? and the chilling effect such governmental efforts have on any of us in a university devoted to the foundational values of free speech and association."

On Saturday, the unanswered question among Columbia students remained: Is the NYPD still conducting surveillance on students?

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday: "We're going to continue to do what we have to do to protect the city."

He did not elaborate.

And Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his police department's monitoring of Muslims ? even outside the city at colleges in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and upstate New York ? was "legal," ''appropriate" and "constitutional."

Authorities left open what students most wanted answered ? "if and when the surveillance ended," Abdullah said.

"I don't think it has ended."

His Pursuing Kindness: Passing Away

I have a feeling today is going to be a posting spree day...there's been a lot on my mind...

Death has been one of them.

Within the last two weeks or so, one by one, people have been dying. We've been getting phone calls of so and so's mother or father passing away. My family is planning on attending the wake service for one of them tonight.

The daughter of one of the men who died was talking about how we aren't guaranteed tomorrow. How we should let our loved ones know how much we love them.

Thankfully, I've never seen death firsthand. My grandfather died in our house when I was ten. I saw him before he died and after he died...but not as he was dying. My aunt - I saw her before she died (she was in a coma) and then after. She looked like she was sleeping.

Death is scary. It's painful, especially as it's a loved one that's dying. My family never saw it coming with my aunt. Never. The night she fell and hit her head, hearing my grandmother cry my mom's name for help, calling the cops because she wasn't waking up... it was a whirlwind of chaos. Things were happening so fast.

If I could only tell her one more time how much I loved her. How much I appreciated her. If I could show her... just one more time. ...God, please, just one more time. When the paramedics forced her onto that stretcher and she held on to the stairs because she didn't want to go with the strange people or to the hospital because it's ntc taboo, I wish I could've held her back with me instead of having to run back into the house and call my dad because my aunt was refusing to go with them. I wish I had known that them wheeling her away would be the last I would see her alive. I wished that my last words to her weren't something to the effect of: "You have to listen to what they say, go with them..."?

This is why I constantly show and tell my family and friends how much I love them and how much I appreciate them. I loved my aunt like a sister. heh. She was my sister. We played like sisters. We fought like sisters. I thought she'd be around for quite awhile. Never thought I'd be sitting here today, crying, wanting her back badly... wanting just one more time to tell her that I loved her. One more time to hug her or do her hair or say and do things that would make her laugh... one more time to see her standing at the stove, making tea. One more time to hear her yelling my name from downstairs for one thing or another. One more time.?

If I had only known...?

The thing is... no one really knows for sure. I came really close to losing my father in 2010. And years previous to that, my mother. There were nights when we weren't sure that she'd make it through the night. I am so grateful that they are alive today. Sure, we have our disagreements and yes, it's been increasingly difficult to submit to their authority, but they are alive. I love my parents. I am grateful for all the effort they have put in bringing peace back to our home.

Sometimes we don't know what we had until we lose them. Or better said, we know what we have, but don't really acknowledge it and later, regret not doing more while we still had them.

In light of death, the little grievances and offenses are petty.
In light of death, saying an "I love you" wouldn't hurt.
In light of death, material possessions mean nothing.

Death might take people away physically, but memories continue for a lifetime.
Making memories with loved ones and reliving them every once in awhile.
...that's what keeps us going sometimes when life gets a bit rough.

Make memories.
Live.
Laugh.
Love.

Travelling With Friends And More Buildings In Prague | QUIPIDITY

The friend that I want to Prague with I have travelled with before. Several times, we have been to Peru, to Vietnam, to Cambodia, to Bruges and I have visited her in London several times. We used to walk home from work together but in 2007 she packed up and moved to London. I miss our walks home. When we met we were both in similar places in our lives. Both had left relationships that were no longer working. We both wanted to travel and were both trying to figure out what our next moves were. Turns out first on the list was Peru, still my favourite of all the trips I?ve done.

Travelling with a friend is a great experience and we are a team when we travel (TEAM SQUIRREL! long story). We know things about each other that we would not have learned any other way and we travel well together. No matter how easy going friends are and how similar their expectations of a trip there are there are always moments and times where one or the other gets snappy, moody or a disagreement happens.

Both of us get grumpy if we haven?t eaten. We have learned to air concerns right away and ?not let them build. We have learnt to communicate so that we understand why somebody might be acting a certain way. Like all relationships friendships take work but the reward is more than worth it. When a problem occurs, we deal with it and then drop it. Move on and focus on the task at hand and the adventures ahead. The problems are not what I will remember, although we?ve had our fair share. I will remember all the laughter, unexpected fun when things don?t go to plan, the shared experiences of seeing so many amazing places. Yes we have laughed, cried and yelled.

As travel buddies go she is the best. Easy going and adventurous. Knows what she likes to see and do but also takes my likes and interests into consideration. Also puts up with me when I?m grumpy, moody or turning into frustrated five year old. The majority of time it is an easy friendship full of laughter and joy.

Team Squirrel! I hope will have many more adventures.

Southern Baptist panel recommends add-on to name

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) ? A panel for the Southern Baptist Convention recommended Monday that its leadership endorse a new, add-on description for the denomination ? "Great Commission Baptists" ? but stopped short of a complete, legal name change.

Officials described the new term as a way to give an official, sanctioned identity to affiliated churches and believers who don't want to use the term "Southern."

Convention President Bryant Wright and other church leaders are concerned that the Southern Baptist name is too regional and impedes the evangelistic faith's efforts to spread the Gospel worldwide.

The "Great Commission" refers to Matthew 28:16-20, in which Jesus instructs his disciples at Galilee to "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

"We are Southern Baptists. That's who we are. The Great Commission is what we do," said Jimmy Draper, the head of the name task force and a former SBC president. He was also president of the SBC's publishing and retail arm, LifeWay, when it changed its name from the Baptist Sunday School Board.

The panel rejected a complete name change, citing the legal costs and difficulties like the thousands of wills and trusts naming the SBC. They also noted the positive associations many hold with the Southern Baptist name, such as with its well-regarded disaster relief organization.

Wright said a name change was first proposed in 1903, and the idea has lingered since then. He hopes when members realize the cost of a legal name change, they will see the wisdom in the recommendation and have unity moving forward.

The executive committee will consider the name recommendation on Tuesday. Anyone can then introduce the proposal at the annual convention this summer to be voted on by delegates, but a measure endorsed by the committee would carry greater weight.

Regardless, all Southern Baptist churches are independent and call themselves whatever they like. In the past, Draper said some pastors had been criticized for not embracing the Southern Baptist name. He said the names could be used together, like "Southern Baptist Convention ? Great Commission Baptists," or either could be used by itself.

"This allows people to make a change if they want to without feeling condemned for it," he said.

Draper said it was possible that over time more congregations could start using "Great Commission," instead of "Southern Baptist," but no one knows if the new term would ever replace Southern Baptist completely.

"We'll just have to see how God leads," he said.

The Southern Baptist Convention formed in 1845 when it split with northern Baptists over the question of whether slave owners could be missionaries. Draper said that history has left some people to have negative associations with the name.

In 2008, about 18 percent of SBC churches were composed of largely non-white members. When surveying the leaders of African-American and other ethnic churches, Draper said they indicated that a name change would help them.

A recent survey conducted by the SBC's own LifeWay Research firm gives weight to the idea that the name does drive away some potential members.

Of the 2,000 Americans surveyed, 40 percent of respondents had an unfavorable view of the denomination and 44 percent of respondents said that knowing a church was Southern Baptist would negatively impact their decision to visit or join the church.

Although 53 percent of respondents overall had a favorable view of the Southern Baptists, the high negatives are a concern for a denomination in which spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a fundamental to their faith.

While the 16 million member denomination continues to plant new churches in the U.S. and around the world, it has seen a decline in baptisms, church attendance and membership in recent years.
