There has been an influx in home owners purchasing a number of home improvements as those who were thinking about moving have been put off by the state of the housing market. With the housing market still recovering many people have tried to increase the value of their home so when the market does start to recover, they will be in a good position to sell. Many people have read different home improvement stories about how best to increase the value in your home but in order to ensure you are spending your money wisely you really need to analyse whether the home improvement you are going to buy is the right one for your home. There are many different ways of increasing the value of your home but not all of them are going to be right for your home. You need to talk to an expert first to get their opinion (this should not carry a cost as many companies will offer free consultation), they will be able to give you a number of options available. The main thing to think about is the style of your home and whether the improvement is going to match it. There have been many cases where a home owner has made a home improvement that should add thousands to the value but when it has been completed it looks out of place and the home owner ends up wasting all that money. One way of seeing how a home improvement may look is to look at your neighbours' homes and see if they have anything similar, that way you can see what yours may look like. If you have nothing to compare against, designers can give you an idea of how it will look. If you are having new doors and windows for example, you need to make sure that colours and styles match the rest of your home. You may need to choose a more traditional style if you have a traditional styled house or if you have a modern styled home, you can afford to be more adventurous about the colour and style. Matching your new home improvement with your home is extremely important in order to get the true benefits. If you are making the improvements to help you sell, make sure you choose something that buyers are going to appreciate and will get the benefits from in the long term such as energy saving doors and windows. Home improvements such as fire doors and stable doors are the best ways of increasing the value and style of your home.

Employees want jobs with flexible work options

Employees want it all when it comes to work-life balance and are even willing to give up about 8 percent of their salary in order to get there, according to a study released Thursday, the Houston Business Journal reports.

The results come from the Mom Corps online survey of 1,096 working adults about their feelings regarding flexibility when it comes to personal life and work. Mom Corps is a national professional staffing that specializes in connecting talent with flexible, full-time or contract positions.

According to the results, 45 percent of those who responded would be willing to give up on average as much as 8.5 percent of their salary for more flexibility at work. Also, 52 percent of respondents said they would be interested in starting their own business to achieve a better work/life balance.

Guest Post: Step 9 ? Nurture Happiness and Foster Resilience ...

    By?Janine Kovac

When my husband and I first found out that we had a high-risk twin pregnancy?with 50/50 odds that we would lose the twins?I realized that my current set of coping skills and strategies were inadequate. I couldn?t just sit back and ?hope for the best? and I couldn?t wish for a different kind of pregnancy or a different kind of life; I needed a way to accept my current situation and if possible, even learn to enjoy it. I turned to Christine Carter?s work with the Greater Good Science Center, specifically the Raising Happiness blog and her book Raising Happiness?with occasional insights that I pulled from cognitive science.

We started with by taking care of ourselves first and by building our social support. When our boys were born in December instead of April (when they were due), we found comfort in our growth mindsets. In my last guest post, ?Step 8: Enjoy the Present Moment,? the twins were home and healthy and I was wondering if the metaphors I used for time?make time, spend time, lose time?were actually affecting my ability to manage my days with less stress and more joy.

Step 9 from Raising Happiness (?Rig Their Environment for Happiness?) presents the paradox that parents are faced with. On the one hand, we want to raise our children in an environment that maximizes their potential for a joyful life (and chapters 1 through 8 provide concrete ways to do this). At the same time, we can?t stick our children in a bubble with the hopes that nothing bad will happen to them.

To address the step, I had intended to write about the twins coming home after three months in the newborn intensive care unit (the NICU) and how we worried our way through the first year. We had weekly meetings with infant-development specialists and monthly medical appointments that monitored the twins? delayed development. I wanted to capture the essence of the paradox that Christine describes in her chapter: while there are definite steps we can take to positively impact our children?s happiness and resilience, our control over our children?s environment is limited. I had the post all mapped out.

But then my husband?s dad died.

A few years ago my father-in-law had been diagnosed with a rare and stubborn form of cancer. This past Christmas we came to understand that his options for further treatment were limited. Over Easter my father-in-law entered into hospice care.

After spending spring break with her grandparents, my five-year-old daughter asked me,
?Is Grandpa going to get better??

?No,? I had to tell her.

    ?Is Grandpa going to die??

?Yes,? I had to tell her.

Here it was, in a spontaneous conversation with my daughter: the reason I needed Chapter 9. We can model a growth mindset for our children. We can practice gratitude and optimism as a family. We can have happiness routines that foster healthy living. But Grandpa?s cancer is terminal.

?I have some books for you,? the director of my daughter?s preschool told me when she heard the news. She sent me home an armful of books from the center?s lending library. They had titles such as: When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Guide to Help Kids Cope and I?ll Hold You and You?ll Hold Me.

?I wish I didn?t have a need for such an extensive collection,? she sighed.

One book in particular, When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death, became an instant favorite with my daughter.

?Losing someone who is special to you is very hard to understand,? the book stated simply. And: ?When someone you love dies, there is no right or wrong way to feel.?

Every page depicted cartoon scenes of life and death: the burial of a pet, a sick parent, a car accident, a memorial service for the Grandpa dinosaur (?Morris Saurus.?)? There was even a cartoon panel with two little baby dinosaur ?preemies? hooked up to tubes and wires in little incubators.

?Just like the boys!? my daughter exclaimed, recognizing the NICU equipment even in dinosaur cartoons. We talked about how the boys were healthy now, but that they were very little and sick when they were born.

?We should give this book to Grandma,? she said one night after we read it for what seemed like the fortieth time. ?So she won?t be so sad about Grandpa.?

As I was leaving for the airport to attend the memorial, my daughter reminded me, ?Did you pack the dinosaur book for Grandma??

On the night after the funeral, friends and family came to the house to remember the man who had been uncle, brother, father, neighbor, and grandfather, among so many other roles. We cried. We laughed. We ordered pizza and watched Grandpa?s favorite movie, an obscure spaghetti Western.

The dinosaur book sat on an end table where it happened to catch the attention of some of the younger grandchildren. I watched as one by one, they nabbed the book, curled up in a corner and flipped slowly through various topics such as, ?Why Does Someone Die?? ?Feelings about Death,? and ?Ways to Remember Someone.? None of the children said anything to anyone. They just silently read through the book, each child leaving it on the table where he or she had found it.

The other day (for the purposes of writing this post), I pulled the book out again. When my daughter saw it, she wanted me to read it to her at bedtime. Afterwards, we played the game suggested on one of the last pages: ?I remember when??

?I remember when Grandpa came to visit and read books to you,? I began.

?I remember Grandpa?s birthday party,? she said.

?I remember the cards he used to make for us.?

We did a few more rounds of ?I remember when?? and then I kissed her and turned off the light.

I?m so sad to have lost my father-in-law. And it breaks my heart to know that my sons won?t know him as we knew him?the man who was my husband?s best man at our wedding, the man who sent thank-you candy to the boys? NICU nurses and read doll books to his granddaughter.

But while we are sad, we are also grateful that we have friends who recommend books to help us talk about what we?re feeling. We?re proud that our daughter?s sadness prompted her to empathize with Grandma. We?re tickled that a little thing like a book in the right place at the right time can remind us to share the happy memories of our loved ones. That?s the real message behind Chapter 9?that the tools we use to nurture happiness are the same ones we use to foster resilience.

Day Trading The Emini ? Training Ground For Big Contracts ...

In 1997 the Chicago Mercantile Exchange created a new financial instrument known as the emini futures contract. It started off small but now is a fully mature market with excellent liquidity.

Now in 2005, the emini futures contract is an investment vehicle of choice, for beginning and experienced futures traders the world over.

In this introductory article, I just want to have a look at why that is. You see for an investment vehicle to gain wide appeal it has to have a few characteristics.

It needs to be accessible to a wide public. The emini is such a vehicle. The minimum you need is around $500 to get started, instead of $5000 or more with regular futures.

It needs to be liquid, in other words there must be enough buyers to buy when you want to sell and sellers to sell when you want to buy.

    The emini is very liquid.

There needs to be a significant profit. The structure of a well traded account is such that with a small amount of start-up capital very significant profits can be made, enough actually to trade for a living.

The taxation situation is very advantageous, in many jurisdictions only being capital gains tax ? you should always check with a professional before making an investment decision.

The lifestyle of a successful emini futures trader can be very comfortable, an hour or so of trading in the morning and that?s it for the day. It?s possible to make $500 or $1000 in an hour or so depending upon how many contracts you trade. It?s also possible to lose just as much, which is my obligatory sobering statement to any gamblers out there.

It?s this lifestyle that gives it such appeal to people like you and me.

    Freedom from the man
    Working from home
Spending more time with the family

But that is the positive. On the dark side, with futures and emini futures there is financial risk, so this is not something that one goes into untrained.

That would merely be gambling. Successful investing, is not so much about being right or wrong or the roll of the dice, but about money management, patience and discipline to following a system. If you are a gambler then stay away from futures, for you will surely lose and can lose big.

If you are willing to learn and trade a system, and utilise money management principles then you can join the ranks of an group of successful traders are making significant profits from home.

Lenovo's 9-inch IdeaTab A2109 shows up at Best Buy, flaunts Tegra 3, $300 price tag

Lenovo's upcoming IdeaTab A2109 didn't drop in on the FCC with its seven-inch brother, but that hasn't stopped it from reaching stores. The nine-inch device appears to be in stock on Best Buy's online store, offering 16GB of storage, an NVIDA Tegra 3 processor and a standard serving of Ice Cream Sandwich for $299. The slate isn't just available for order, either -- according to Best Buy's stock locator, it can be found in brick and mortar stores too. The A2107, on the other hand, isn't so readily available, but we'll let you know when Lenovo lets it come out to play.

    [Thanks, Justin]

Stop Smoking to Become Richer, Healthier and Wiser | ArticlePDQ ...

Everyone knows that smoking can damage your wellbeing, and with the increasing cost of cigarettes, everybody knows it?ll also damage your success, nevertheless the financial cost when it comes to taking out life insurance may well not be really understood.Over 2 weeks ago the smoking ban came into effect for all public areas in Scotland, with similar programs for the rest of the UNITED KINGDOM, and along with the ban the sales of nicotine patches and gum have rocketed.A standard life insurance coverage through one of many high street insurers such as Barclays insurance [] reveals that smokers are liable to be spending almost twice as much as an identical non-smoker. For example, a 20 a day guy smoker, aged 35 next birthday, taking out 100,000 cover for 20 years would have a premium, after tax relief, around 7.55 per month. The identical smoker would be needed to spend 13.39 per month for exactly the same address. Looking through all the UK vendors employing an insurance assessment site like Moneynet also offers similar results. This represents a massive huge difference throughout the life of the full policy,Due to the larger profile which currently surrounds the subject of smoking, which has happened recently thanks to the bar, many insurance firms are seeking to receive a large numbers of requests from cool ex-smokers seeking re-quotes to be carried out on their current policies. It?s very important to note however that to be considered as a non-smoker by many insurance companies, ex-smokers need certainly to have refrained from any tobacco services and products for over 12 months, and is going to be asked to take a simple and entirely simple cotinine test.James Yerkess, the pinnacle of Tesco Life Insurance said: ?The url between smoking and early death is obvious and well documented in life insurer?s claims statistics?, however, ?Many individuals are unaware that they can request their life insurer to re-quote their policy if they?ve stopped smoking for thirteen months or maybe more. It?s surprising that more firms do not seem to shout about it.?To benefit from the possible upsurge in the numbers of ex-smoking consumers, Tesco has released a ?quit forever ? assurance. This can be a promise to reduce steadily the premium of cool smokers to that of a non smoker after a period of thirteen months so long as the policyholder?s general health hasn?t damaged and they still promise that they will continue to remain a non-smoker.Research director Amanda Sandford from the anti-smoking class, ASH said, ?We welcome any measure that encourages smokers to quit for life.? She feels that the promotion of non-smoking attitudes by life insurance firms, ?Clearly highlights that stopping smoking not only benefits your health but additionally your wallet.? Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men: Healthy micronutrient intake linked to reduced DNA fragmentation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

Date much? You'll want these tech tools

    Getty Images Stock

Online dating can be a minefield. There are apps and even flameless candles that can help.

    By Andrew Kardon, Techlicious

Since the advent of the Internet, online and dating have been courting each other in a web of matchmaking merriment. Sure, online dating sites have brought?lots of people together, as well as created countless Dates from Hell, but technology also provides some pretty powerful tools to protect and improve the overall act of dating.

It can be a real jungle out there, so read on for the must-have dating technology:!

    It's a matter of trust

Looks have always been deceiving, but in today's crazy dating scene, pretty much anything goes. So how do you know if you can trust that perfectly dressed guy with the chiseled jaw who insists on walking you home? Sites like BeenVerified.com can offer instant background checks on individuals, by culling together all their public records. With mobile apps for iPhone or Android, you can even check up on your date while you're still on your date.

    Honestly Now!

Does this dress make me look fat? Post up your burning question (and a photo, if appropriate) to Honestly Now! and experts in the topic, along with other Honestly Now! users, will give you brutally honest answers. Honestly Now! is free to use, but the advice is priceless.

    Tanita

    Just breathe

Wondering why your date's sitting so far away from you? Are flowers wilting at your mere presence? Could be that someone needs a breath mint. Still not sure? Then you definitely need to get your hands on Tanita's FitScan Breath Checker ($34.95 on amazon.com). Small enough to fit into your pocket, this discrete device measures your level of bad breath in just nine seconds! How does it do it? With science! When you exhale, the device calculates the amount of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) that are given off by bacteria.

    Something suddenly just came up

How many times have you asked a friend to be your dating lifeline? You know, have them call you an hour into your date to see how it's going and basically give you an "out" if you're having an awful time. "Oh, my God. It's my mom. Her dog just ate her car keys and she needs a ride to the vet. I'm so sorry but I've gotta run..." If you've got the friend to help you regularly, that's great. But if you don't or you're just sick of asking, then check out the Bad Date Rescue app (free on iTunes), brought to you by the online dating experts over at eHarmony. You can set up your "rescue" well in advance, or quickly activate one to start in a matter of seconds or minutes with a touch of a button.

    Call me, maybe

Nothing like giving a guy a fake phone number at the end of the evening. But what if you kind of like the guy but aren't sure? You could end up with a total creep who now knows your number, or he could've been "the one" if only you had given him your real number. Well, there are plenty of ways to use anonymous phone numbers, such as the iPhone app Burner ($1.99 on iTunes), which instantly lets you create a disposable phone number. Each number is a new private line that masks your real line and works just like a regular number. Ready to dump that chump? Just "burn" the number and you'll never hear from him again.

    Energizer

    Flame on

Nothing sets the mood for a romantic evening like lighting some candles. There's just something about the flickering of the flame and the pleasing scents they gave off. But why risk knocking one over in a fit of passion, or passing out with your hottie and forgetting to blow out the candle?

There are a slew of flameless wax candles available now, but we especially like this realistic-looking Beeswax Pillar made by Energizer (available this fall). It's completely safe and even includes a timer to shut off after 4, 6 or 8 hours. Romance without the danger!

As technology continues to advance, you just know companies will be doing their best to improve your dating life. Today's dating tools are a great start, but what do tomorrow's hold? Perhaps a Kissing Machine that lets you kiss someone halfway around the world or an Intimacy Dress that becomes transparent based on your emotions. For now, we'll just be sure to have the Hotels.com app handy on our phone. Y'know... just in case.

DIY Network's Rob Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice, shares age-appropriate gizmos that will give your kids an edge as they head back to school, including a solar-powered backpack and a pen that is also an audio recorder.

Snipers versus tanks in Syria's Aleppo

In Aleppo's Mashhad neighbourhood, rebels man a series of sniping positions, eyeing the government forces and their tank just 50 metres (yards) up a sniper alley from behind a short wall of sandbags.

There are other tanks nearby, and when they fire the boom reverberates through otherwise quiet streets almost empty of civilians.

The fighters spot a young boy carrying belongings wrapped in a blanket as he approaches the sniper alley, and call out to him.

"Hey you, boy, stop right there!" one fighter shouts. The boy freezes, standing by a smouldering pile of rubbish, then dashes across the alley at the rebels' signal.

They stop him as he arrives safely on the other side, suspicious that he could be a spotter for the government forces nearby. They ask him what he is doing and what he is carrying.

He loosens the knot tying the blanket together to reveal a pile of clothes and bedsheets.

"My family has all left the neighbourhood, I just came back to get us some things," he says, before the rebels send him on his way again.

The fighting in the neighbourhood is sporadic, incoming sniper fire followed by the cracks of returning outgoing gunshots.

At one point the rebels decide to send a group across the sniper alley, so their comrades open covering fire and spent bullet casings fly up into the air and onto the pavement as three men dash across the street.

Their mission is to detonate a mine the rebels say was left behind by government forces, both to prevent anyone else from driving over it and to scare the other side a little too.

"Get back, get back," they shout, before a loud explosion sounds, sending dust and shrapnel metres into the air and prompting chants of "God is greatest" from the rebels.

On the edge of the Saif al-Dawla neighbourhood, the sounds of explosions come from the other side, with government tanks arrayed across the neighbourhood, firing shells every 10 minutes.

They land in back yards and roads, sending up white plumes of smoke and forcing cars to speed along routes, the drivers unsure whether they might be hit.

The rebel commander, a stout man with a fleshy face covered in stubble, shouts into a walkie-talkie, the primary means of communication for the rebels.

"The situation? They are trying to advance in the area, we're holding them back, but there are a lot of wounded and martyrs," he tells a fellow commander.

As he speaks, word comes that government tanks are also on the move in the nearby Sukari neighbourhood, and he calls up some of his men for dispatch to the scene.

"We don't have enough RPGs to go around," one rebel complains, referring to rocket-propelled grenades.

"Just one is enough -- you can take out the whole army," the commander insists.

The fighting in Saif al-Dawla is among the fiercest in the city, and the rebels said the body of a civilian killed by a tank overnight is still lying in the neighbourhood's main street because it is too dangerous to retrieve it.

Elsewhere in Aleppo, tanks sow destruction and fear by the Jisr al-Haj roundabout, on the edge of the Fardoss district.

Multiple tank rounds were fired on the edge of the roundabout in the afternoon, prompting panicked civilians to run to the relative safety provided by nearby walls. Some sheltered under an overpass in a bid to avoid flying shrapnel.

Minibuses trying to pass through the area on their way out of the city were forced to screech through the roundabout, their passengers tense and wide-eyed as shells exploded just metres away.

Reliable Information About Equipment Leasing And Its Benefits ...

Equipment leasing is an agreement between the lending and borrowing parties. This agreement takes place when the borrowing person promises the lender that they will pay for the commodity in question. The borrower has the right to use the commodity for the stipulated period of time.

To lease out in lay mans language may be used to mean handing over your equipment to someone else who over the stipulated period of time becomes the new owner. For this to be actualized, the new owner will be liable to pay some rental fees. It should however be noted that the lender will always remain to be the owner of the asset even over the agreed duration of time.

Leases are grouped into two categories, the finance lease or the rental agreement lease and the operating lease. In the rental lease the hire period is long to an extent that the lease holder tends to use the property for almost the rest of its life period. During this time the lessee will be using that particular item as if he is the rightful owner although he is not.

A lease is usually classified as an operating lease if in any case it does not secure for the lending party the upturn of the capital expense and a return on the invested funds throughout the lease period. Therefore, the property should always be treated as a fixed asset thus the receivable rentals should be added in income during the leasing period. Costs, including depreciation, incurred in earning the rental income should be charged to income.

Property ownership comes with many advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the prospect of gainful operations over the productive life of the asset, more income from the appreciation in value of the asset, or residual value realization. The disadvantages include the changes in return due to changing economic conditions, technological obsolescence and idle capacity. The lender should be keen to expend any costs that they have incurred in negotiating and arranging the lease in the same year they were incurred.

A finance lease cannot just be cancelled. However, it may be cancelled under some conditions. For instance, this may happen upon occurrence of some remote contingency with permission of the lender or if the lease is extended or renewed. These conditions are usually rare.

It should be noted that when leasing, the rights and obligations involved in this contract will be similar to those of the outright buyer. One is required to be keen in considering the choices that are at their disposal. As a result of this, accounting comes in. One is accountable to the leasing terms and conditions.

The lessee will therefore, in the balance sheet include finance lease assets together with owned assets under the heading of tangible fixed assets. However, leased assets should be distinguished from owned assets and amount disclosed, again show a liability in respect of lease payments not yet made. The liability in respect of minimum lease payments not yet paid is split into long-term and current liabilities.

Equipment leasing has been of great importance and of benefit to many people over years. Despite the fact that even equipments from leasing, they also are termed as assets. These assets can be accounted for in the account books. This however will be determined by the fact that they will in future be of economic benefit by increasing the inflow to the enterprise.

16 Things Morrissey Hates -- Including Canada, Dogs, Rollercoasters & Rain

    Jo Hale, Getty

Former Smiths lead singer Morrissey is a curmudgeon of near-legendary proportions.

The caustic British 53 year old isn't shy about voicing his opinions on things, and those opinions usually involve outlandish, withering insults directed at his enemies. For example, a couple weeks ago he teed off against the "blustering jingoism" of the London Olympics with a sideline rant connecting England to Greece and Nazi Germany in 1939.

    Yeah.

These tirades have made him more than a few enemies over the years -- it's reached the point where other bands write songs about how much they hate him -- but it's also made him someone who's always worth paying attention to.

At Spinner we've been having a hard time keeping track of all the things the Mozzer has been hating on lately, so we decided we needed to build a list. So here it is... 16 things Morrissey hates:

Body of Japanese reporter killed in Syria flown home

The body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed while covering the anti-regime movement in Syria's second city was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto apparently came under fire Monday from pro-government troops in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fighting erupted there last month, according to her long-time colleague Kazutaka Sato.

"I am sorry to say that I cannot find words about the fact that I have her come back this way," an emotional Sato told a news conference at Tokyo's Narita airport.

"I think she has really worked hard. You have really worked hard. That's what I want to tell her now" added Sato, her colleague from the small but respected Japan Press.

Yamamoto, 45, is the fourth foreign journalist to have been killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo. She had covered several armed conflicts, including those in Afghanistan and Iraq with Sato.

Yamamoto was a known face on Japanese television, who came to prominence after surviving a US tank shelling on the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad in 2003 in which two journalists, one from Reuters and one from a Spanish broadcaster, were killed.

Her body was flown from Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines plane, accompanied by Sato and two of Yamamoto's sisters.

A dozen of the plane's crew and airport workers offered a silent prayer after the coffin carrying her body was lowered on to the tarmac.

Her body was to be carried to her home in Tokyo and autopsied by police to determine whether she was deliberately targeted, media reports said.

"I want to come close to the truth about how she died," said Sato. "She was tender and had a strong sense of justice. She was straight and hot blooded."

An investigation of the Psychological Trauma ... - Morocco World News

    By Mohamed El Aazouzi

    Morocco World News

    Rabat, August 24, 2012

The examination of how women experience and convey trauma ? in their daily lives ?needs to consider the varying impacts of social, political, cultural and ideological factors.

This article aims at investigating the concept of trauma in relation to the female identity. The investigation of trauma and woman generates questions like: what are the sources of this psychological shock? What are the effects of this traumatic experience on female subjectivity and selfhood? The issue at hand involves problematic concepts such as: identity, identity politics, subjectivity and selfhood. I would like to establish a link between identity as a cultural product and trauma experience and the human socio-biological transformations. The concept of trauma, here, shall be used interchangeably with other concepts such as cultural and gender oppressions ?since it refers to any severe inner-emotional shock provoked by a painful experience.

In her controversial work ?The Feminine Mystique? (1963), Betty Friedan addresses women?s repression as ?the problem that has no name.? This problem lay buried, forgotten, for hundreds of years in the mind of the majority of women who believe and stress that the fulfillment of women is guaranteed through their subordination (marriage for instance). This belief puts women?s subjectivity and selfhood at stake. But, first of all, what is subjectivity? And how we come to construct such selfhood?

Early philosophy of enlightenment views the subject as a free agent and thinking being. This understanding of man as autonomous negates the fact that the subject lives in a world that is governed by certain cultural, social and even political structures and patterns. The twentieth century theoretical debates concerning identity came to re-think and re-consider this claim. From this perspective, any attempt to understand the subject involves a serious analysis of one?s social, cultural and political structures. For instance, Jacque Lacan, in most of his works, stresses that there is an implicit relationship between language structures and individual subjectivity. ?That is to say, our subjectivity is structured like a language. This linguistic intervention starts during the early stages of childhood and personality development. It occurs during the transition phase from the imaginary stage to the symbolic order. Toril Moi argues:

When the child learns to say ?I am? and to distinguish this from ?you are? or ?he is,? this is equivalent to admiring that it has taken up its allotted place in the Symbolic Order and given up the claim to imaginary identity with all other possible positions. The speaking subject that says ?I am? is in fact saying ?I am he (she) who has lost something ?and the loss suffered is the loss of the identity with the mother and with the world. The sentence ?I am? could therefore best be translated as ?I am not? according to Lacan.

Thus, our subjectivity construction is never static but rather dynamic. ?It is an ongoing process that is marked by discontinuity and psychological interruption(s).?This transition from the imaginary stage to the symbolic is very much characterized by a psychological loss of the imaginary identity. Instead, it provokes and compensates for this psychological loss by establishing a firm connection to the outside world. The symbolic world, according to Jacques Lacan, refers to the world of language as a systematic order of symbolic representation(s) of the social order(s).

Accordingly, language represents not only a set of structures and grammatical rules, but a whole range of social regulations. Thus, when one acquires language, s/he automatically receives a certain gender role ?therefore cultural identity.?This makes it clear that the terrain of subjectivity/identity construction is the unconscious as another face of language. Lacan argues: ?what the psychoanalytic experience discovers in the unconscious is the whole structure of language.? ?In other words, the unconscious is a hidden structure just like language. ?The latter is, indeed, the medium between the human unconscious and the social order. It is the vehicle or the bearer of culture and cultural discourse(s).

Generally speaking, this problematic issue of identity construction has been tackled from different perspectives following different agendas. After dealing with this concept from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, the rest of this essay will deal with it from a feminist sub-alternist perspective.

Based on claims of injustice done to particular social groups, political movements such as the Second Wave Feminism, the Black Civil Rights in U.S, gay and lesbian liberation and the American-Indian movement emerged as reactionary acts in the second half of the 20th ?century.

Such social movements created a philosophical and literary body of works that pose questions about the nature, origins and future of the identities being defended. The term identity politics means a wide range of political activities and theorizing based on the shared experiences of injustice of members of a certain social group. It suggests a political orientation built around a pre-existing social identity, which, in its formation, aims at securing the political freedom of a specific constituency stigmatized within its larger context.

?For instance, in the 1960s, women ?despite of their pivotal role in social movements such as the movement against war in Vietnam and the 1968 students? movement which called for more rights ?were denied recognition and position they deserve.

They were often positioned as second-class citizens. Consequently, by the mid 1960s, women began to react against this marginalized position under the famous slogan ?the personal is political.? ?Since then, women started to call for more equity and respect as activists. Women?s theoretical, philosophical and literary works have come to analyze extensively this interlocking system of oppression. Popular literature as one aspect of female literature can be considered as a terrain that manifests women?s long-life struggle against male patriarchal discourse.

Romance novel, regardless of the many literary techniques and aesthetics it utilizes, aims at dismantling this complex system of oppression either as an individual or collective experience. Based on the incidence of cultural encounter, popular romance sets women?s experience of racial, gender, sexual and even cultural oppression as universal. This multiplicity of oppression replaces the traditional notion of oppression as operating in terms of man and women, with other binary oppositions such as white woman/ woman of color; heterosexuality/ homosexuality and so on.

As a result to this theoretical multiplicity, ?feminist theory is currently experiencing a crisis of identity, one that not only threatens the very foundations of feminism as it has been articulated to date, but also its continued existence, as well as its role and influence in the academy.? ?Multiple voices within feminism, such as Black feminism, Jewish feminism and Lesbian feminism, articulated the notion of ?feminisms? rather than feminism. Moreover, they further complicate the problem of racial division within the feminist theoretical discourse.

The Indian feminist-Marxist critic Gayatri Shakrobatry Spivak who is concerned with the subalternity of the (post) colonial subject especially women argues, in her controversial essay ?Can the Subaltern Speak?,? that women are double oppressed. They are marginalized by virtue of their gender as well as in terms of their race. They are constructed as the voiceless ?Other? to the male colonized subject; and at the same time, they are inferior to the female colonizer by virtue of their race or color ?non-white. By the same token, Spivak argues: ?As object of historiography and as subjects of insurgency, the ideological construction of gender keeps the male dominant. If, in the context of colonial production, the subaltern has no history and cannot speak, the subaltern as female is even more deeply in shadow.? ? This quote highlights the idea that women, in the context of colonial production, are not only excluded from history, but they are also discriminated by the male patriarchal discourse.

Moreover, G. Spivak warns the risks of talking on behalf of the subalterns. Since, this act of liberating the subalterns through speaking on behalf of them, involves a sense of what Spivak calls ?epistemic violence.? ?For Spivak, the colonial subject, mainly woman, can speak for herself, but she is denied the space in which ?and a concrete means by means of which ?she can voice out her problems. Thereby, it can be said that the subaltern subject is denied a space of enunciation ?to quote Homi Bhabha.

How to Join the Ranks of the Digital ?Supercreatives:? An Interview ...

Fast Company named Leslie Bradshaw one among The Most Influential Women in Tech last year. Her Los Angeles-based agency, once known exclusively for its data-rich infographics and social data-driven interactive displays, is now a leading force in content development and visual storytelling with clients like Google, Nike and American Express.

CCO spoke to Bradshaw about what it takes to be a rising star in the competitive world of digital supercreatives, how to work with a creative agency and why some content breaks through the clutter.

CCO: How do you ensure your clients are not jumping straight to execute tactics (e.g. infographics) instead of thinking strategically?

LB: Thanks for asking this question ? it?s what helps us vet whether or not we want to work with a client. If a client comes to us with what we call ?tactical enthusiasm,? we typically turn the project down. If someone believes an infographic is going to solve all their communication needs, or that an infographic is going to go viral, we know we don?t have the right match. We want our clients to look holistically and strategically over all communications goals, and study how visual storytelling and data-driven storytelling fit within that mix, and within what mediums.

Some clients will come and say, ?We really liked your infographic. Will you make us one?? Those projects aren?t that interesting to us because, yes, of course we could make the infographic, but we need to keep pushing ourselves as an agency to do larger, more programmatic engagements. What we?re releasing now are projects that are much bigger, have a longer burn and tend to explore multimedia like video, analog, print, mural and reporting. Our skills transfer in a lot of different directions ? including video, analog, print and murals ? but I like to say just because you have a hammer doesn?t mean everything is a nail.

Now, just because you see an infographic on Mashable doesn?t mean it?s the right solution. In fact, often it means an infographic isn?t the solution because it?s such a crowded, noisy landscape and infographics are very time-intensive. To do them well, you have to do not only primary research, but secondary and tertiary research to produce a definitive story that has never been told. You need to follow a process and have enough data points to make it interesting. Most people don?t have the stomach for that whole process. They have the desire to be recognized by the media and have their voice heard, but data-driven storytelling is not always the best answer.

Infographics are a high-level tactic that is good for educated audiences; they are not actually good for consumer audiences. Consumer audiences are much more likely to share something on Facebook that?s really ?snackable.? Think about Pinterest. Those are the pieces of content we call ?snackable? content ? short, bold statements. If we produce content that has just one or two data points, we call it a data graphic.

We?ve been producing data graphics for clients like Nike and Google over the last three years. We figure out how to produce a lot of interesting content that will be grabbed through Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Instead of investing in a single anchor piece of content like an infographic or video, we?re able to take that budget and apply it to 50 graphics and feed the masses through their social channels for many meals as opposed to one meal. So what we tend to do is, back to your question on strategy, look at overarching, communication goals that clients have, and how can data-driven storytelling and/or visual storytelling be a part of that.

What projects are you proudest of in your career?

I?m proud when we create something that never existed ? projects that are innovative and meaningful. One of my favorites is the C-SPAN video library we completed a few years ago. We were asked to design a better experience for how information ? including 30 years? worth of congressional testimony and other important government files and data ? is sorted and displayed. We won a Peabody for our work together, which was the highest honor we could have received from a very great group of people.

I also have projects that I?m personally interested in, both the outcome and the journey. When I was in high school and college, I wrote papers like, ?Does God exist?? and ?Why are there not more women in leadership roles in business or in politics?? I pursued those questions because I was fascinated by them. Some of the projects you?ll see at JESS3 are personal interests I want to explore visually with my team. On that theme, I?m really proud of our Foursquare ?I Voted? project.

We are always working to figure out how to best deliver a content-oriented experience to the end user, whether interactively, through video, or a piece of static content like an infographic or white paper. We like projects that bring together different sources to say something in a new way, especially those that are complicated and difficult to solve ? like The State of Wikipedia or our work with Amnesty International visualizing 50 years of human rights. We love to look at large data sets and complex topics across a spectrum of time or ideas, then pull them all together to deliver meaning and value.

Some of your clients ? Nike and Google ? are very sophisticated partners. What about companies that just don?t have the same resources and sophistication? How do they play in the big time?

I have two takes on this. One take is you have brands ? our four biggest brand clients are Intel, Nike, Google and American Express ? that have a clear sense of self and a clearly articulated brand. Those brands are so recognizable and people are passionate about them ? to the point where some get the Nike swoosh tattooed on them. With that type of brand, we are focused on ?brand maintenance.? Whereas when we work with Eloqua and Mindjet, we are focused on brand building. Mindjet and Eloqua were not unsophisticated, but they also weren?t at the level of a Nike.

The No. 1 thing we look for when brands like Mindjet or Eloqua come to us is humility. Having the humility to say, ?Hey we don?t know, but we want to learn.? And, ?We don?t want to put so many constraints in place that you can?t do creatively what we?ve seen you do for other people.? Our employees love working on Eloqua and Mindjet, not because they?re big, well-known brands, but because the employees have greater freedom with those brands to express them in new and exciting ways.

That is my No. 1 recommendation: When you come to an expert, a consultant or an agency, you have to have that humility and willingness to offer runway.

When you take on a new client, what do you look for that signals the partnership will be successful?

We look for a clearly demarcated point of contact; someone who is either empowered with decision-making abilities themselves or who can internally ?socialize? ideas and come back to us. We?ve worked with clients where a committee of nine people gets on the phone and the voices are distributed. We come out of it feeling like we?re in the United Nations ? everybody is around the table but no one really has decision-making authority.

We also look for focus. We watch some projects fall out because our point of contact is being splintered and stretched too thin, and it creates a bottleneck. I would say to a CMO, make sure when you are engaging with an agency that you have one single, clearly enunciated, articulated, punctuated point of contact at the onset. Empower that person with decision-making abilities or make clear how she or he fact-find and gather and come to that consensus before coming back to the agency so it isn?t splintered and diluted feedback. And be sure the person has the appropriate time built into every single day to be part of the creative process, giving feedback, giving approvals, brainstorming and driving it forward.

Tell me about some of your favorite apps.

I call myself a ?late-early? adopter because I?m not on the cutting edge. I love Netflix, Hulu and HBO GO to decompress because I don?t have a television. I also love the default Yahoo Finance app that comes with the iPhone. When Facebook and LinkedIn each went public, I tracked the IPOs with that app. I?ve always liked reading about business and economics, and keeping an eye on the markets.

Two or three others that I?ve really been jamming with I love Shazam. I upload a lot of music to my phone from that app. I love Path. I use it like Instagram. There?s a fun, smaller group of people on Path. It?s a little less noisy and higher quality than Facebook, plus I love Path?s photo filters.

And last but not least, Tumblr. There are times when I have an interesting thought or come across a quotation ? something that?s a little more in depth or a little meatier than just a tweet ? and I use Tumblr to talk about it.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I rely on three pillars for inspiration. Pillar No. 1 is entrepreneurship and leadership. I look for entrepreneurial leaders that have been in my shoes at some point building a company, people like Sheryl Sandberg [COO of Facebook]. Seeing how other people are thriving and surviving inspires me.

The second pillar would be social sciences. I have a background in gender studies, anthropology, political science and economics, and they all frame how I think about approaching client problems.

The last pillar is agriculture. My mother comes from a long line of farmers, starting six generations ago coming across the Oregon Trail. Agriculture to me has always meant family, hard work, valuing nature, working long hours to get something done. Agriculture is about the literal nourishment of one?s self and in the work that I do there is a nourishment of the web with content or the nourishment of a client?s goal. It keeps me very grounded; literally and metaphorically. I?m inspired by the hard work my parents put into our farm back in Oregon, and when I?m able to I love to chip in.

I have a younger sister, and she?s a human rights advocate and activist. She works at Amnesty International on the human-trafficking and sex-trafficking issues. Her dedication and compassion also keep me grounded. It?s easy as an entrepreneur to get lost in the stuff swirling around the industry like the Facebook IPO. You have to figure out what we?re really here for. My sister reminds me there are bigger things out there beyond the money; it?s about how you treat people and how you behave as a citizen of this world.
